We also used emoticons to death. Remember those!? The sheer, unadulterated excitement of being able to add your own custom emoticons was mind-blowing to me. It was quite annoying when my friends would change their display names and I couldn’t tell who was who; but it was also massively awe-inspiring when one of them used ASCII art.
